Ottawa Keeps Watchful Eye on Russian Tensions Amidst Armed Uprising

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada’s incident response group is convening to discuss the latest developments in Russia. The country is currently grappling with an armed rebellion led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a prominent mercenary chief.

In a morning tweet, Trudeau assured that Canada is in contact with its allies and will closely monitor the situation. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly also shared a tweet stating that the G7 foreign ministers held a call to address the overnight developments in Russia, without disclosing further details.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, Prigozhin’s Wagner group seems to have gained control over military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, a southern city where Russia’s operations in Ukraine are coordinated.

Amidst the escalating tensions, the Associated Press reports heightened security measures in various regions of Russia, leading to the cancellation of several mass events.
