Biden to run for second term in 2024

US President Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has officially announced that he will be running for re-election in 2024, telling reporters on Friday that he intends to make a formal announcement “relatively soon.” Biden, who is 80 years old, has long said that he plans to run for a second term, but the lack of a formal announcement had caused some uncertainty among his supporters.

Despite his age, Biden’s aides and allies have already begun laying the groundwork for a campaign infrastructure and fundraising apparatus for a 2024 bid. If he wins re-election, Biden would be 86 years old by the end of his second term, making it a risky gamble for the Democratic Party, which is already facing a tough election map to hold onto their majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Biden’s expected pitch for a second term is to “finish the job” after a first term that included several legislative victories, such as securing billions of dollars in federal funds to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and investing in new infrastructure projects.

Despite his low approval ratings, which are currently stuck in the low 40s, Biden’s doctors have declared him “fit for duty” after an examination in February. The White House has also stated that Biden’s record shows he is mentally sharp enough for the demands of the presidency.

Biden’s re-election bid is likely to be a rematch of the 2020 race against former President Donald Trump, who has already launched his own campaign.
