Zara’s accidental origin of its name leaves customers surprised

Zara, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, is known for its trendy and affordable clothing.

However, many shoppers might not know how the company got its name.

The name ‘Zara’ was chosen by the company’s founder, Amancio Ortega, in the 1970s when he opened his first store in Spain. Ortega had originally wanted to name the store ‘Zorba,’ after the popular film ‘Zorba the Greek.’

However, he discovered that there was already a bar in the same area with the same name.

To avoid any confusion, Ortega decided to rearrange the letters of ‘Zorba’ and created ‘Zara.’

He removed the ‘O’ and ‘B’ and used a spare ‘A’ from the letters that were delivered as backups.

So, despite the belief that the brand’s name comes from the founder’s name, it is actually a result of a happy accident.

Nonetheless, Zara has become a global brand with over 2,000 stores worldwide, offering stylish and affordable fashion to millions of customers.
