Wedding Guest Bus Crash in Australian Wine Region: 10 Dead, 25 Injured

A roadblock is set up near the town of Greta

A devastating bus accident occurred in Australia’s wine country, resulting in the death of 10 people and leaving 25 others injured, according to authorities on Monday.

The 58-year-old bus driver has been arrested and is currently held at a Cessnock police station, where charges will be filed, stated Police Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman. While specific allegations were not disclosed, Chapman confirmed that there is sufficient evidence to warrant charges.

The accident took place around 11:30 p.m. on a foggy night at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive in Greta, a town located in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, north of Sydney.

The passengers on the bus had attended a wedding at the Wandin Estate Winery and were en route to their accommodations in Singleton, revealed Chapman. One guest described the wedding as a fairytale celebration on what had initially been a pleasant day.

Emergency services swiftly transported the 25 injured individuals to hospitals via helicopters and ambulances. Thankfully, 18 passengers emerged unharmed.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his gratitude to the first responders and offered government assistance to the victims and their families. He expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss of life and injuries, emphasizing the unimaginable nature of the incident, particularly considering that people rent buses for weddings to ensure the safety of their guests.

Cessnock Mayor Jay Suvaal described the crash as “truly horrific” and expressed concerns about the impact it would have on the wider community. Greta is located in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, known for its picturesque vineyards and restaurants. The area attracts visitors from across the state and the country.

The wedding took place during a long weekend, with Monday being a public holiday in most Australian states.
