Turkey relocates embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan after attack on envoy’s car

Smoke billows over residential buildings in Khartoum

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced on Saturday that Turkey will move its embassy in Khartoum to Port Sudan due to security concerns after the Turkish ambassador’s car came under fire from unidentified assailants.

According to a Turkish diplomatic source, the attack on the ambassador’s car did not result in any injuries, but Turkey has decided to temporarily move its embassy to Port Sudan on the recommendation of the transitional government and Sudan army.

The move comes amid a fragile political situation in Sudan, where the transitional government is trying to maintain stability and push forward with democratic reforms after the ousting of former president Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

Turkey has had a strong presence in Sudan, with Turkish companies investing in infrastructure projects and the two countries signing agreements on defense and security cooperation. However, the recent attack on the Turkish ambassador’s car has raised concerns about security in the country.

Cavusoglu emphasized that Turkey would continue to support Sudan and work towards strengthening bilateral ties despite the relocation of the embassy. The Turkish foreign minister also called for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice.

The incident comes amid a rise in violence in Sudan, with armed groups carrying out attacks in several regions of the country. The transitional government has struggled to assert its authority over the security forces and maintain control over the country.

Turkey’s decision to move its embassy to Port Sudan highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Sudan and the need for international support to address them.
