The man who was wrongfully arrested and shot with rubber bullets is seeking accountability from the Vancouver police

Elijah Barnett

A man, who was wrongfully arrested and shot with rubber bullets, is seeking accountability from the Vancouver police officers responsible for the incident.

Elijah Barnett was walking a dog in Yaletown when he was knocked to the ground by police and K9 units, who proceeded to beat and shoot him with less-lethal rounds. Barnett sustained injuries, including cuts, scrapes, and bruises all over his body.

Despite providing his personal information, he was held on the ground for an hour before being released with an empty apology. One witness recounted that the police fired on Barnett from six feet away without warning. Barnett, who is partially deaf and was wearing headphones at the time, has requested the suspension without pay and charging of the officers who arrested him.

The Vancouver Police Department confirmed that the officers involved are still on active duty as of Monday, and that the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner will conduct an independent review of the incident.

The officers were responding to a report of a suspect in a violent home invasion in Calgary, and Barnett was mistaken for the suspect. The real suspect, Dean Patrick Gallant, was arrested the same day, while another suspect, Tinesha Lee Redwood, was taken into custody the following day.
