Stars with the worst personal hygiene

If you’re rich and famous star, chances are you have no problem affording things like soap, shampoo, and deodorant, right? You could even hire professionals to bathe you, if you so desired! So it must be a problem of motivation for the celebs on this list, who are surprisingly some of the biggest and most popular stars of movies and TV.

Would you believe Gwyneth Paltrow, of all people, supposedly has bad body odor? What about Jennifer Aniston, arguably one of the most beautiful and successful sitcom stars of all time? Well, she allegedly used to do some particularly private “ladyscaping” right on the couch she shared with a roommate. Heinous, right?

This list goes on and on, and it actually gets worse from there. In fact, some stars are straight up gross. Let’s take a look at Tinseltown’s A-list, and how they get a get a big fat F when it comes to personal hygiene.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Remember how actress Gwyneth Paltrow swore off ever going to the Met Gala again in 2013? The Oscar winner complained that the scene was too hot and sweaty for her, but it turns out it was probably an even worse experience for anyone who stood next to her. “Poor Gwyneth looked picture-perfect, but it must have been the hot lights that caused her to be a little strong on the nose,” an insider told the National Enquirer. “It was pretty pungent, and I don’t think she had a clue. I saw at least two people wave their hands in front of their noses after passing her.”

A friend of the actress made an excuse for her, telling the tab, “Gwyneth has heard that aluminum is supposedly carcinogenic, and that putting an aluminum-based deodorant directly on those sensitive armpit glands can increase the chances of breast cancer. She’s trying out new deodorants; she’s bound to fail with some of them…but Gwyneth tells pals she’d rather be smelly than dead.” (For the record, the American Cancer Society disagrees with Paltrow.)

Russell Crowe

Actor Russell Crowe’s body odor is reportedly as foul as his temper. Joan Rivers once said, “He has a body odor problem. I prefer to sit downwind of him at awards shows.” Insiders told the National Enquirer that after repeated pleas for better hygiene on the set of Cinderella Man (2005), co-star Renee Zellweger insisted upon a body double for anything intimate.

One of Crowe’s buddies justified the actor’s odor. “Russell is just an ordinary bloke and he certainly doesn’t have a hygiene problem,” he said. “If you stand really close to him you may catch the occasional whiff of alcohol and curry after a night on the town. But you show me a normal, down-to-earth bloke who isn’t like that the morning after he’s had a few beers and some good grub.”

Jessica Simpson

Designer Jessica Simpson’s big, bright smile may not last long. The singer and reality starlet told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that she hardly ever brushes her teeth. “My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and I do floss everyday,” she said. “But I don’t brush them everyday. I’ll use a shirt or something…I know it’s gross, but I always have fresh breath.”

It wasn’t the first time Simpson announced her aversion to brushing. People reports that Simpson told a concert audience once, “Find me when I’m 60 and [my teeth] will probably be all out, but I literally have these strong powerful teeth that don’t need to be brushed.” Can someone please get this woman a Sonicare stat?

Matthew McConaughey

Actor Matthew McConaughey told People (via the New York Daily News) that he hasn’t worn deodorant in 20 years. “I don’t like to smell like someone or something else,” he explained, but admited, “If my smell starts to bother someone else, I’ll take a shower.” One person it bothered? His How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) co-star Kate Hudson. McConaughey told Playboy, “She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, ‘Will you please put this on?'”

Julia Roberts

America’s sweetheart stinks. Actress Julia Roberts told Oprah in 2008, “I don’t actually use deodorant…it’s just never been my thing.” Apparently, neither is soap. A former security guard for the pretty lady told Star (via PopCrunch), “Julia is a total hippie. She’ll go days without showering. She likes to save water—she’s really green. And she likes the smell of her natural oils.” The guard added, “She also says that she can’t wash her hair too often because it’s so dry. She may have a point there, but she often gets musty.”

Shia LaBeouf

Actor Shia LaBeouf was so dedicated to his character in Fury (2014) that he went to particularly gross lengths to relate to the WWII soldier. A source told the Daily Mail, “He pulled out his own tooth during the first few weeks of filming and then refused to shower for weeks on end so he could better understand how his character would have felt living in the trenches.” Of course, some of that may have been typical LaBeouf in need of a loofa. Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, who co-starred with the actor in Sia’s “Elastic Heart” music video in 2015, told Entertainment Tonight she gave the actor wipes, telling him, “‘I’m sorry, but you’re kind of dirty.'”

Cameron Diaz

Actress Cameron Diaz, who’s often seen sporting pit stains on the red carpet, told E! News, “I don’t believe in antiperspirant. It’s really bad for you. I haven’t used it for almost 20 years. You’re stinky, because you use antiperspirant. It keeps all the stink in.” She advised, “Let it go and just trim your armpit hair so it doesn’t hold onto the scent.”

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis

Actor Johnny Depp and his ex, singer Vanessa Paradis, don’t see the big deal about bathing. “Johnny usually smells because he rarely showers,” a source told Fox News (via Pop Crunch). “He isn’t big on personal cleanliness and Vanessa isn’t much different. They found their perfect match in each other—it’s hard to be around them. Their personal hygiene is not their priority.”

Megan Fox

Actress Megan Fox admitted to FHM (via Hollywood.com) that her poor memory makes for some awkward (and awful-smelling) situations. “I forget to flush the toilet,” she confessed. “Friends will tell me, ‘Megan, you totally pinched a loaf in my toilet and didn’t flush.'”

Robert Pattinson

Actor Robert Pattinson may look a little cleaner nowadays, but at his Twilight Saga peak, he reportedly reeked. When Extra asked the actor about rumors that he hadn’t shampooed for six weeks, he replied, “Probably. I don’t know. I don’t really see the point in washing your hair…If you don’t care if your hair’s clean or not then why would you wash it?” He added that his hair isn’t the only part of him that’s grody. “It’s like, I don’t clean my apartment ’cause I don’t care. I have my apartment for sleeping in and I have my hair for just, you know, hanging out on my head. I don’t care if it’s clean or not.”

Some people can pull off a filthy scalp and get away with it, but sources close to the actor told MTV News that he’s not one of them. “He stinks,” an anonymous crew member on the Twilight films said. “I mean, it’s awful. He never showers, and it drives people on the set crazy.”

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart allegedly loves bathing as much as her ex, Robert Pattinson…that is to say, she supposedly avoids it to the best of her ability, even to the point of turning him off. A source told the National Enquirer, “Rob’s a laid-back guy, but he finds Kristen’s grungy habits a turn-off. She doesn’t wash her hair often, only brushes her teeth once a day and rarely wears perfume. He loved it when she made an effort for the Twilight promotion. But now she’s back to her old lazy self and he’s not impressed…Kristen is very set in her ways. When she’s not working she just can’t be bothered to wash her hair or put on makeup—it’s just not her.”

The Café Society (2016) star has admitted to getting stinky, telling Stylist magazine, “When I’m nervous, I’m so mindless. I twiddle my thumbs and my hands sweat and I smell bad.” When they were still together, she told Vogue U.K., “I love the way [Pattinson] smells. And him me. Like, he loves to lick under my armpits. I don’t get this obsession with washing the smell off.” Maybe she should survey people stuck standing next to her on a hot day about why she may want to rinse off more often.

Zac Efron

Baywatch (2017) hunk Zac Efron may be fresh-faced, but he reportedly doesn’t smell it. “Zac isn’t a big fan of showering,” a source told Star magazine (via Stuff). “It’s so gross, because Zac loves to work out and plays basketball all the time—and then goes days without showering. When he gets lazy, he likes to clean himself with baby wipes!”

Kendra Wilkinson

Former The Girls Next Door star and Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson is beautiful, but supposedly smells hideous. A source told Star (via Kiss FM), “Kendra loves to look sexy, but she couldn’t care less how she smells. I don’t know if she has pets but she smells like urine most of the time. She almost never takes a shower, and doesn’t use perfume, either.”

Leonardo DiCaprio

Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio is so obsessed with going green that he reportedly doesn’t want to waste water showering. A source told the National Enquirer (via Celebitchy), “Leo has let his love for the environment take over his whole world, and it’s killing his love life. He only showers a couple of days a week to conserve water, and he considers deodorant to be ‘unnatural.'” The source also noted that he often misses his trash and recycling pickup days, causing his home to smell as bad as he does.

Jennifer Aniston

Nancy Balbirer was roommates for a short time with Jennifer Aniston when they first started out in acting in New York City. Balbirer told the New York Daily News that Aniston was awkward to live with. Specifically, Balbirer claims the Friends (1994-2004) star would give herself bikini waxes on their shared couch (ouch!) and stuff her bra with chicken cutlets from the supermarket—actual chicken cutlets; not lingerie inserts. Aniston’s rep vehemently denied the claims, but we can’t help but wonder if those cutlets gave her a leg (or a wing) up on her relatively unknown roomie.

Brad Pitt and Eli Roth

Brad Pitt’s Inglourious Basterds (2009) co-star Eli Roth revealed to People that the hunk doesn’t have too much time to shower and has even shared tips on how to beat the stench without bathing. “He shared that when you’re sweating and don’t have time to take a shower, you just take a baby wipe and rub it under your armpits,” Roth said. “After a scene, Brad had to get next to me for a close-up shot, and he said, ‘Damn, you’re ripe.’ I said, ‘I didn’t have time to shower.’ He said, ‘Baby wipes, man, baby wipes. I got six kids. All you’ve got to do is just take them, a couple quick wipes under the pits. Man, I’m getting [peed] on all day. I don’t have time to take a shower.'”

Britney Spears

Britney Spears’ former bodyguard, Fernando Flores, claimed in a 2011 lawsuit that the “Baby One More Time” singer was more gross than gorgeous behind closed doors. “Spears had obnoxious personal habits, such as chain-smoking cigarettes, which made her smell continually of stale tobacco,” he claimed in documents obtained by the Mirror. “She broke wind or picked her nose unselfconsciously and unapologetically…She did not bathe for days on end, did not use deodorant, did not brush her teeth, did not fix her hair, did not wear shoes or socks.” Spears’ camp denied the claims, but we have seen her strolling barefoot in a gas station bathroom.

Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick

Sources told the New York Daily News that Gossip Girl (2007-12) stars Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick’s shared apartment was pretty much a pigsty—far from the rich, glamorous lives their onscreen counterparts enjoy. “It stinks,” a disgusted insider said. “Those boys are slovenly and have garbage and clothes everywhere. You’d think they were living in a frat house!”

Miley Cyrus

Actress-singer Miley Cyrus makes a lot of questionable decisions, so her controversial hygiene may be the least outrageous part of her “strategic hot mess” persona. In March 2016, Cyrus reportedly wore someone else’s retainer, essentially opening herself up to a cesspool of someone else’s germs (including including staphylococcus and candida—the stuff that triggers yeast infections). Medical experts also speculated that her coated tongue may be another sign she’s not taking care of her oral hygiene. Then, of course, there’s the whole “Wrecking Ball” video.

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper confessed that he might stink, but he’s taking steps to compensate for it…just not the most obvious step to fix the problem. “I don’t use deodorant really anymore,” the War Dogs (2016) star admitted to Esquire. “I do take a lot of showers, so maybe that helps. In the morning and then at night. And after I work out, I’ll take a shower. So maybe three a day.” Hey, at least he’s doing something, right?

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley seems to have her heart in the right place, but she may want to get her nose checked out if her own stories about her hygiene are true. The Fault in Our Stars (2014) actress told Parade, “I basically have horse hair. It’s so low-maintenance. The less I put in it, the better. When it was long, I used shampoo from Living Libations, but now it’s really short. I only shampoo it like once a month—the oilier, the better.”

It doesn’t end there. A source told Star (via Celebitchy), “Shailene rubs these essential oils all over her body, and they aren’t very welcoming scents. Her smell is totally offensive, and it’s gotten so bad that her stylist is having a hard time borrowing designer outfits for her to wear because she makes the gowns stink! There is absolutely no way to get that stench out of those expensive fabrics. Designers don’t want their pieces back after Shailene is done with them!”

Viggo Mortensen

When Viggo Mortensen was playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings film series, People reported that he slept in the woods and didn’t bathe. When the Toronto Star (via People) asked co-star Sean Bean if that was true, Bean cheekily replied, “Bear in mind, he was very smelly.” The Daily Mail (via People) also described Mortensen as having “a less than religious devotion to soap and water.”

Mortensen has scoffed at those claims, telling Wired, “I did not live in the woods in costume as some have reported. I went camping in my own civilian clothes. Neither did I sleep with the horses as has erroneously been reported, although I was quite fond of them and spent a good deal of my spare time around them.”

Uma Thurman

Actress Uma Thurman sounds like a nightmare to dress. One stylist revealed to Star (via Kiss FM), “I worked with her on a shoot for a major fashion house. She’d often show up wearing clothes covered in crusty smelly food. I pulled a piece of shrimp off her back that I swear was two weeks old.” Girl, you have Kill Bill (2003) money. Get to the laundromat!

Kourtney Kardashian

Reality star Kourtney Kardashian is beautiful, but according to baby daddy Scott Disick, she has a tendency to smell really ugly. In 2013, while breastfeeding daughter Penelope, she allegedly decided to forgo deodorant completely, leading Disick to lament, “She reeks. Only because she doesn’t believe in wearing deodorant because she thinks it’s bad for her breastfeeding or something.” She reportedly attempted to make her own deodorant out of baking soda and cornstarch.

Harry Styles

Musician Harry Styles may be handsome, but rumor has it, he doesn’t smell attractive. His One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson once said (via Sugarscape), “I dislike it when Harry farts and then pretends it’s not him for literally 10 minutes.” It’s not just the singer’s flatulence that’s offensive. The Daily Star reported that his ex, songstress Taylor Swift, reportedly complained that Styles “had the worst breath, like coffee, cigarettes, and booze.” Even customarily quiet bandmate Zayn Malik told Top of the Pops (via Inquisitr), “I don’t think there’s enough money on this earth that would make me sniff Harry’s socks!”

Mel Gibson

Sources told Star (via Kiss FM) that Aussie actor Mel Gibson tops the list of repellent celebrities. Insiders allege the Hacksaw Ridge (2016) director is “the worst smelling celebrity on the planet,” sporting a signature stench of “body odor and cigarettes.”
