Recall Issued for Waffle Maker in the U.S. and Canada Due to Reports of Burn Injuries

Health Canada has announced a recall for a specific waffle maker due to the risk of consumers being struck by burning pieces of waffle.

The 5-inch PowerXL Stuffed Wafflizer Waffle Maker was recalled last week after it was found to pose a burn hazard.

In the United States, over 350,000 units of the waffle maker were sold, while in Canada, 777 units were sold.

According to the recall notice, “Hot pieces of the waffle or stuffing can be expelled from the waffle maker during use or upon opening the product, posing a burn hazard to consumers.”

The issue stems from a problem with the latching mechanism when the waffle maker is overfilled. Excessive waffle batter inside the appliance can cause pressure to build up, leading to the ejection of hot waffle pieces when the waffle maker is unlatched.

Empower Brands, in collaboration with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, issued the recall. They have received 44 incident reports from U.S. customers, including 34 burn injuries. Three individuals sought medical attention for their injuries.

No injuries have been reported in Canada thus far.

The affected models are the ESWM02 and ESWM03. However, the Health Canada recall only includes the 5-inch ESW02 model. Consumers can identify if their waffle maker is affected by locating the model number on the rating label, which is attached to a tab on the power cord.

Customers with affected units should immediately stop using the waffle maker and contact Empower Brands to receive a free latch adaptor part and instructions for repairing the appliance.

The affected waffle makers were sold in Canada between July 2021 and October 2022 and were distributed by Tristar Products Inc. and Spectrum Brands Canada, Inc.

The waffle makers were available in 11 colors, including three sold in Canada: black, cinnamon, and slate.
