Pope Appoints Argentine Bishop to Lead Vatican Doctrinal Watchdog

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has selected Monsignor Victor Manuel Fernandez, an esteemed theological advisor from Argentina, to lead the Department for the Doctrine of the Faith, one of the Vatican’s influential offices responsible for ensuring doctrinal orthodoxy.

Fernandez, currently serving as the archbishop of La Plata, Argentina, is commonly known as the “pope’s theologian” due to his rumored involvement in crafting some of Francis’ significant documents.

The Department for the Doctrine of the Faith plays a crucial role in upholding the teachings of the Church and disciplining theologians who deviate from Catholic doctrine in their writings or teachings. In recent years, the office has gained prominence in addressing allegations of sexual abuse within the clergy.

Fernandez’s influence is widely acknowledged, particularly for his involvement in shaping Francis’ notable document, “God is Love,” which introduced the possibility of allowing divorced Catholics who remarry in civil ceremonies to receive Communion. This proposition, challenging traditional Catholic teaching on marriage, has generated both support and opposition among the faithful.

Taking over from Cardinal Luis Ladaria, Fernandez replaces him as the head of the department. His appointment follows the unexpected removal of Cardinal Gerhard Mueller by Pope Francis in 2017, shortly after Mueller succeeded him in the same role. Fernandez will assume his responsibilities in mid-September.

Known for his prolific writings and expertise in biblical studies, Fernandez has enjoyed the support of Pope Francis since their time in Buenos Aires, where then-Cardinal Bergoglio endorsed his nomination as rector of the Catholic University of Argentina, despite some objections to his doctrinal stances.
