Police: Boyfriend angry over abortion fatally shoots US woman

Police tape surrounds a crime scene

A 26-year-old woman, Gabriella Gonzalez, was fatally shot by her boyfriend, 22-year-old Harold Thompson, in a Dallas parking lot on Wednesday. Thompson was charged with murder and is being held in the Dallas County Jail without bond. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Thompson had tried to put Gonzalez in a chokehold in the parking lot after she returned from Colorado, where she had an abortion. The affidavit also stated that Thompson was the father of the child and did not want her to get an abortion. Texas banned abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy in September 2021. Since the Roe v. Wade decision was overturned last summer, nearly all abortions have been halted in Texas except in cases of medical emergency.

Surveillance video from the parking lot shows Gonzalez shrugging Thompson off before he pulls out a gun and shoots her in the head. She falls to the ground, and Thompson shoots her multiple times before running away. Gonzalez’s sister was at the scene and heard the shooting, while another witness saw Thompson try to choke Gonzalez but couldn’t call the police because she didn’t have her cell phone.

Thompson had previously been charged with assaulting a family member who accused him of choking her in March, but the affidavit from March did not specifically name Gonzalez as the victim. However, the woman had told the police that Thompson “beat her up multiple times throughout the entirety of their relationship” and had made threats to harm her family and children. There was no attorney listed who could speak on Thompson’s behalf.
