OTTAWA – Today, eligible Canadians will receive a special payment as part of the GST credit program to assist with the increasing costs of groceries.
Dubbed the “grocery rebate” by the Liberal government, this payment was announced in the spring budget to help Canadians cope with food inflation.
Approximately 11 million Canadians will receive this additional payment alongside their regular GST credit payment, according to the Canada Revenue Agency.
Couples with two children can expect to receive up to an extra $467, while single Canadians without children may receive up to an additional $234. Seniors, on average, can expect an extra $225.
Last fall, the federal government also provided a similar payment in an effort to mitigate the impact of high inflation on low and moderate-income families.
Although Canada’s inflation rate eased to 3.4 percent in May, grocery prices continue to rise significantly, with a nine percent increase compared to the previous year.
