7 dead after Mexico City parking garage collapses

Mexico City’s Civil Protection Secretariat Fausto Lugo said at least seven people died and 10 were injured after a parking garage under construction collapsed.

Lugo said rescue workers did not find anyone else trapped after searching the site Monday in Mexico City’s Álvaro Obregón municipality. Red Cross Mexico was involved in the search and rescue operation.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said it launched an investigation to determine whether the company charged with construction of the parking garage is responsible for the incident.

“We regret the death of the workers in the landslide in Álvaro Obregón; all our support and solidarity to their families,” Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera‏ said in a statement.

Mexican outlets report an official said a flaw in the construction process may be the cause of the incident. A preliminary investigation suggested a concrete beam hit a pillar and caused three stories of the structure to collapse.
